Affirmation of Baptism (also known as “Confirmation”) is celebrated at Zion following a two-year faith journey by our young preteen and teenage students. Students begin this journey when they are aged twelve or in the sixth grade, whichever comes first.
The Affirmation of Baptism is, in a sense, a renewing of the baptismal vows by the student. When these children were baptized, they were anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and joined in God’s mission for the rest of their lives. By affirming their baptism at the end of their Confirmation journey, they affirm and continue the covenant God made with them in Baptism.
This journey is one of growing in faith, hope, and love toward God and neighbor. Students typically meet in small groups for classes three times a month during the traditional school year. Classes are taught by the pastor or another qualified instructor. Each child in the class is joined by an adult member of the congregation who serves as the student’s mentor throughout the two years of their journey. The mentor becomes a key supporter and prayer partner to the child and his/her family throughout this faith journey.
Our course of study includes the Bible, Luther’s Small Catechism, and The Lutheran Book of Worship as instruction materials. Small group interaction includes study, social activities, prayer time, worship leadership, community service, and reflection.
Membership at Zion is not required. Occasionally, Zion’s offers Affirmation of Baptism/Confirmation for older youth who may have not completed prior work. If you’re interested in learning more, please contact Pastor Tim.
